More than 10,000 stray cats roam New York City’s streets, and the winter months are particularly difficult for these homeless felines. Luckily, these cats have Leslie Farrell, founder of Architects for Animals. This amazing organization runs a fundraising initiative in which architects build creative outdoor winter shelters for the city’s strays, which are donated to NYC Feral Cat Initiative to be put to use.

Take a look at some of 2011’s inventive shelter designs and check out the awesome high-tech winning design.

This is George. He went missing June 17, 2010. I never saw him again. I miss him so much it hurts, he was the best cat in the world. I will always love my Jorge Rodriquez and I will never, ever forget him. <3

This is Spice. She’s fifteen and just over two months ago she was attacked by a staff. Shook and bitten viciously. We thought she wasn’t going to make it. She wasn’t eating, drinking and wouldn’t get up off of the bed you see her laying on in this picture, even if she needed to go to the toilet. We eventually got her to drink some water through a syringe, started going to the cat tray and we fed her tuna because she wouldn’t eat anything else. She then moved onto dry food. Two months on she’s almost 100% back to normal! I don’t know what I’d do without her.
